Breaking the Mould

Breaking the Mould

It's hard to break the cycle of instant gratification. It's so common in our day to day lives, that we don't even notice it anymore.

I sum it up with a reference to a piece I saw on a local current affair show. The lady who was being interviewed was discussing Afterpay, a method that allows people to buy now, pay later. This is a great business idea by the way, and the business is thriving during these times. In her words: "It allows me to buy things I want even though I don't have the money to pay for them".

I guess I'm odd, because when I don't have money to pay for things, I don't buy them. But, people need things now, I guess.

Now, this becomes an issue for our health because wanting things now leads us to do kind of stupid shit, like detoxes and intense fitness challenges. You see, we're so used to getting things now, that we then project that into other areas of our life.

By the way, these things actually work for a really small percentage of people, the ones who are used on the testimonials and the before and afters. And great work to those people.

But if we dig a little deeper, we see that not only does it not work in the long term for a lot of people, but others who do get results that seem to stick around, get them over a really long period of time.

This obviously does not fit with our instant gratification society.

If there's one thing you should delay gratification with, it's your health. And probably relationships, and your career.

Actually, now that I think about it, most of the real meaningful stuff in life would be way better if we delayed gratification.

As hard as it is (and it is hard), you might have to break the mould if you want to achieve goals with your health.

Until next time,

Marco
