The Work/Life Balance Myth
The Work/Life Balance Myth
"Balance" Won't Get Your Results (In Anything)
We often talk about the fabled work/life balance.
A balance between the time and effort we put in at work and the time we have at home with friends and family.
And it's all mostly bullshit.
Now, it's not that having work/life balance is a bad thing.
It's probably a worthy goal.
But us humans aren't really wired like that.
We pursue goals in a way that actually puts our life out of balance.
And so your efforts to climb the corporate ladder are likely going to put you out of balance.
It has to be that way, or you won't achieve the goal.
This is the same with our health and fitness, but to a less extent.
Our efforts to get fit and healthy require us to be out of balance.
Not so much in the time invested - training more tends to follow the law of diminishing returns.
But in the energy and effort we put in.
You see, to get healthy, then getting healthy has to become a priority.
It has to be something you think about on a regular basis.
Even if it's as simple as packing your gym bag, organising your day to get to the gyms, or planning your meals, it's all energy, time and focus that goes towards your health.
It's can't be any other way.
It's not going to work if you turn up to the gym in work clothes, when you feel like it on the way home.
It's not going to work by choosing a healthy meal now and then.
It's not going to work if you don't consider your sleep and hydration in some way.
And so, our lives need to go out of balance, and shift towards a healthy lifestyle, otherwise we'll cruise along doing exactly what we're doing now.
The key then is to learn how much effort to put in to get and keep results.
And be happy with the fact that being out of balance, is the only way tot get things done.
Until next time,
Marco
