Why Do We Lift Weights?
Why Do We Lift Weights?
The Simple Training Principle Everyone Seems to Be Forgetting
Lately I've really simplified my training.
It's genuinely limited to 4 exercises per session. I limit it to that on purpose, because I want to do better, not more. Most people ending up becoming okay at moving when it comes to their fitness program. This isn't bad of course, it's better than where they were before.
But a bit fitter, and a bit healthier, seems like little reward for so much effort.
Most people's training programs are constant circuits of exercises that don't really help them much, all with the intention to sweat and burn fat.
But, they are having fun and doing it with other people, so there are massive benefits to these training styles and programs.
I'm just of the thought you can have fun and get results from the same program, and it's about simplifying training.
But all of this has got me thinking - why do we lift weights?
I might be wrong in this, but I always thought it was for two reasons:
to become stronger
to add muscle
And the reason this is important, is because so many of our training styles and programs don't take this into account.
"But that's not my goal" I here you say. I understand this.
But when we limit how much weight we move (because the rest periods are so short), and limit the time we exercise (because there are limits on class times), then can't you see how we're placing a ceiling on our results? And bringing in variety in exercise doesn't help to achieve those other goals.
We limit fitness, we limit calories burned, we limit performance.
So either we have to train more often each day, or somehow add in another variable.
Or...
We can use the weights for what they were intended, and that is, to get stronger.
Getting stronger helps to unlock our potential to achieve more in all our other goals.
This doesn't mean we need to become power lifters, and it doesn't mean these other training styles become redundant. In fact, they become ever more important because they become a supplement to the main point - getting stronger.
But my thought, is if you're going to lift weights, then use them for what they were intended for.
Until next time,
Marco
