Saving for the Future (While Getting Benefits Now)

When I was young, I was given some money for my birthday. I was 7 or 8 at the time.

I'd never really been given money up to that stage. We didn't do work for pocket money around the house, so I'd never really had to handle money.

And as you can imagine, I didn't understand the concept of saving.

With that money I bought myself a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figurine. Michelangelo to be exact.

I always liked his party attitude, and thought nunchucks were cool.

Probably not my smartest purchase, but definitely not my worst.

The way we treat money is often the way we treat health.

Spend now, worry about it later.

Hell, we even spend money we don't have these days.

All to keep up and try to get ahead.

I can understand fully when someone says they don't want to train.

It's like saying "I'll give up time and money that I could be using to do other fun stuff, to put myself through pain, because that will apparently make me healthier and a better person."

But it's not like that time we give was going to be used to further our education or make our life significantly better now or into our future.

The same with the money we spend; we weren't going to use that for shares or to put into an investment.

Basically, the reasons we tell ourselves not to train, are never real, life changing reasons.

We aren't willing to save now for our future. In fact, save isn't even the best word to describe when we train.

The right word is invest.

You see, when you're 7 you're not thinking about investing for your future.

You're probably not doing it at 17.

But at 27, all of a sudden, we think about these things.

Money, like our health, means giving up/putting away/putting towards something now, that will help us in the future.

But unlike money, with our health, we get a return on investment so much sooner.

It's not often you could invest 1 hour (or 1 anything), and feel good straight away, and be setting up your future.

Each time we train, we feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. We get those endorphins run through us, that completely change our headspace.

We can genuinely turn from negative to positive with exercise.

And in the long run, we're setting ourselves up to be healthier and live longer and fuller lives.

If we can save or invest, just a little bit each day, we will eventually have a portfolio we can be proud of.

But don't get trapped into thinking you need to save or invest a huge amount every time.

What's better is consistency.

A little here, a little there, and when you can, put a bit more in.

But if you want that better future (with that extra benefit of feeling good now), then you need to start saving and investing now.

Trust me, the future you will thank you for it.
