Why a Short Term Focus is Limiting Your Potential

Think about how different your life was 10 years ago.

I suspect it would be very different to today.

If I asked you this question face to face, I'd give a short pause to think about this, because you'll be able to recall your major life events pretty well.

Now imagine what you could achieve in 10 years.

Imagine how life would be different, the people you'd have met, the places you'd have been, how the world would change so much.

In this case, I'd give a much longer pause to dream and imagine. 10 years is a long time after all and thinking that far ahead is difficult.

It's just hard to imagine yourself 10 years older or how life might change.

Now imagine what you could do in 1 year.

A shorter pause this time, because obviously, you can't get as much done in 1 year as you can in 10.

Thinking a year ahead is hard, but much easier than thinking 10 years ahead.

Now imagine 8 weeks.

An even shorter pause this time, because obviously 8 weeks is much shorter than a year, and you can't get as much done.

It's easy to think 8 weeks ahead though.

This is what happens each time we do 8 week challenges.

It's easy to imagine; it's only two months after all.

But there's not much you can do.

Each time we attempts things with a short term mindset, we're setting ourselves up to always try easy things, that unless with string together over and over, never leads to anything worth much at all.

While thinking long term may be difficult, at least it lets you achieve difficult things.

That's why instead of an 8 week challenge, I've designed a 6 month challenge. It's still pretty short term, especially compared to 10 years, but at least it can help you attempt something difficult and make a genuine change.
