The "Secret" "Truth" About Getting "Cover Model Ready for Summer"
Years ago I used to play football (soccer).
It was a fun time in my life, especially with the team that we had; after each game you could be guaranteed some laughs over drinks.
We won two years back to back, but for the life of me, I have no idea who we played in those finals.
Do you remember who finished second in then 2016/2017 Premier League Season?
Or maybe who was runner up at Super Bowl 45?
Who got Bronze in the 100m at the Beijing Olympics?
Without looking at your phone, many people wouldn't be able to answer those questions.
Firstly, because of all the information you process each day, specifics like this are obviously hard to remember.
But also because we are shown the winners. They are rightly celebrated, but everyone who doesn't win is often forgotten about.
And so it is in the fitness industry.
Across social media we are bombarded with the images of the successful. The people who have got the pecs, six packs and been on the covers of magazines.
They get all the likes and all the hearts because people are drawn to this. And all the likes and all the hearts leads to this being more widely seen, until almost all we see are people with those results.
There is nothing wrong with this. These people should be proud of what they've achieved. And having them as motivation is brilliant.
But what we're shown is the very top of the pile. The people who stuck it out. The people who this became an obsession for. And even a few who (do I dare to type this?) are more genetically blessed than others.
What we miss, is the greater percentage of people who are struggling like you are maybe.
The late nights and early mornings from working a job, looking after kids, having a social life.
Because that's not appealing is it? That won't get as many likes.
What we see on social media is both a good and bad. Equally a motivation and equally soul destroying when we don't achieve something as good or as fast.
So here's a reality check:
It's okay to have different goals to these people
It's going to take a long time
It's okay to struggle
You might not even get the results
No one cares about your results apart from maybe your immediate friends, and if anyone else does, that is genuinely a bit weird
You are not your six pack
Further to that, a six pack doesn't make you a good person
There are no secrets
Don't judge yourself compared to others
Don't believe the bullshit
So what's the point of it all?
The point is to have a goal that moves us in a direction of what we believe to be a better life.
That is why you should be doing this at all. For a better life. To give yourself something to focus on. To teach yourself lessons that are applicable to life by focusing and striving on this one thing.
It has nothing to do with social media (despite what we’re shown), and everything to do with living a better life.
In my mind, it’s about being Strong for Life.
