Health is an Infinite Game
Being in the fitness industry, I've been exposed to a lot of competitions in fitness, be it performance or physique.
Competitions are a great way to get people involved and focused on a goal.
Plus people just love competing and pushing themselves out of their comfort zone.
Of course, if it's a competition, there has to be a winner and a loser.
These competitions run often, and sometimes the same person or people win multiples times.
Sometimes there are new winners.
But each time, the competition is run again, and again, always having a finite time frame and a set of rules.
This is an example of a Finite Game.
But when it comes to health and fitness in general, there is no winner.
At the end of your life, no one will crown you the winner of fitness, or the winner of health.
And no one will say everyone else is the loser.
No when it comes to our health and fitness outside of competitions, there is no winner and loser.
Someone else winning does not take away from you winning as well.
This is an example of an Infinite Game.
A game with no end (well until you reach your end), no timeframe, no set of rules, no defined winners or losers.
In fact, when it comes to your health, the point of the game is to keep playing.
You look after your health, so you can keep looking after your health.
Of course, you can go a long time not looking after your health, and keep living a normal life for a long time.
And some people do looking after their health, and unfortunately get struck down with something.
But that happens in an Infinite Game - there are no rules.
It's more likely though, that looking after your health will provide benefits in the long term.
Enough to give you the chance to keep looking after your health for a long time.
So instead of seeing health as a game of comparison, see it as a lifelong journey, where you get to keep playing and improving bit by bit.
Until next time,
Marco
