The Process AND The Outcome
Setting Goals Isn't Enough
It's hard to start a training program without thinking about the end result.
Most people who start with a coach, PT or facility are joining up for one reason: the result.
And sure, what people want is all different, but most of the time people are focused on a physical change, be it strength, muscle gain, fat loss or an improvement in fitness.
As a coach I know though that those physical results are actually a way to gauge, at least at the start, how a person feels inside.
Confidence, happiness, overcoming darkness in some way.
Basically, it's hard to measure happiness or pride, but most people believe losing a few kilograms will help them achieve that.
One of the problems with achieving results with your fitness though, is that it takes hard work and consistency.
Both of which are pretty hard.
And so, when we focus too much on the result, and it takes longer than we want it to (it always does), we can easily lose motivation.
What we need to do is focus on the process and the outcome.
We can't just start training with no goal.
That leads to ending up somewhere we don't want to be, or just ends up frustrating us.
But equally, we need to focus on the process, because that's what will actually help us get the result.
Unfortunately, just focusing really hard to an outcome without doing the work, still leads to not achieving the outcome.
And so we need to keep both in mind.
A focus on consistency, giving our best effort and going for quality, not quantity.
But also a focus on the result, so we can understand if we have achieved it, need to change the process, or need to change the goal completely.
Keep the goal in mind.
But understand we can't pray and hope to achieve what we want.
