Training As We Get Older
Training As We Get Older
How Can We Feel Good and Get Results as We Get Older?
Now, at the age of 37, I'm getting the best results I've ever had from training. Many of my clients are too. This, I believe, is because I've changed my philosophy on training. Whereas before it was a lot more about hard circuit training, now the focus is squarely on progressive overload, the most basic of training principles. Progressive overload, simply, is about being training with heavier weights over time.
So I wanted to share these thoughts for others. Here are a few things I've found as I train clients over 35:
It gets harder to start as you get older: the longer you go with bad habits, the harder it is to change them or introduce new ones. It's also a bit more shock on the system to go from years of doing not much to straight into training. In other words, start now, and keep doing something, even if it's just once or twice a week (twice is preferable).
The training changes: the body changes, recovery isn't as good as we get older, and we shouldn't be doing the same things as in our 20's. That doesn't mean you can't train hard, it just means things need to be a bit different.
Different priorities: many people in their 20's can train hard, and go out to party hard. And while this is still possible beyond 35, it takes a different toll. Most people instead want to feel better for the second half of their life, and so the training should reflect that.
What I've found rarely works for clients over 35:
Endless circuits: this high intensity/group training craze provides little to no results for most people, except sweating and feeling good. Both of these reasons are enough to keep doing it, but most people over 35 can also get good results in strength and improved body composition if they trained correctly.
Any training that doesn't focus on progressive overload: let me reiterate that progressive overload is the most basic training principle. It is the reason we lift weights. So to completely skip this foundational principle, is setting people up to not make progress in any way.
Are you over 35 and training? What are your results like and do you want better?
Or have you not started training yet but would like to take control of your health?

Until next time,
Marco
